The Tale of Peter Rabbit

I am finding out that one of the many joys of being a mother is reading to my little girl. I've started reading to her before she takes a nap. (Yes, she is taking naps now! This has been a daily struggle for us both.) Because I have an affinity for vintage items and classics, I decided to sit down with her and read The Tale of Peter Rabbit...partly because I don't remember the tale myself.

So come to find out...Peter Rabbit's father was murdered by Mr. McGregor! AND, his wife put him into a pie... which Mr. McGregor, Mr. McGregor's son, dog, and assumably Mrs. McGregor happily enjoyed (see picture above).

Mrs. Rabbit informs her little bunnies that "your Father had an accident there; he was put in a pie by Mrs. McGregor."

My question is what exactly was the accident?

This concerns me. As a mother.... As a fellow child at heart.... Oh, Beatrix.

On a lighter note, the Hippopotamus got invited to play with the other animals. Thanks Susan Boyton!

More updates on concerns for young readers to come...

  1. I feel your pain, for I, too, have the whole Beatrix Potter collection (which is really also very long!). You should look up the other classic stories for more unsettling plot lines- Hansel and Gretal, Little Red Riding Hood! But, Ruby is not disturbed- still doesn't mean I didn't struggle with reading them!
